Rejoicing Through Hard Times

Rejoicing Through Hard Times

1 Peter 1:1-9

Though we differ in so many ways, there is one thing we all have in common: We all know what it means to hurt. Suffering is the universal language.

Peter, an apostle of Jesus Christ, To God’s elect, exiles scattered throughout the provinces of Pontus, Galatia, Cappadocia, Asia and Bithynia, who have been chosen according to the foreknowledge of God the Father, through the sanctifying work of the Spirit, to be obedient to Jesus Christ and sprinkled with his blood: Grace and peace be yours in abundance.
– 1 Peter 1:1-2 (NIV)

So why can believers rejoice in hard times and experience hope beyond suffering? I want to give you six reasons we can rejoice in sorrow.

1. We have a living hope

Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! In his great mercy he has given us new birth into a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead.
– 1 Peter 1:3 (NIV)

2. We have a permanent inheritance

Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! In his great mercy he has given us…an inheritance that can never perish, spoil or fade. This inheritance is kept in heaven for you.
– 1 Peter 1:3-4 (NIV)

3. We have a divine protection

…who through faith are shielded by God’s power until the coming of the salvation that is ready to be revealed in the last time.
– 1 Peter 1:5 (NIV)

4. We have a developing faith

In all this you greatly rejoice, though now for a little while you may have had to suffer grief in all kinds of trials. 7 These have come so that the proven genuineness of your faith—of greater worth than gold, which perishes even though refined by fire—may result in praise, glory and honor when Jesus Christ is revealed.
– 1 Peter 1:6-7 (NIV)

5. We have an unseen Savior

Though you have not seen him, you love him; and even though you do not see him now, you believe in him and are filled with an inexpressible and glorious joy…
– 1 Peter 1:8 (NIV)

6. We have a guaranteed deliverance

…for you are receiving the end result of your faith, the salvation of your souls.
– 1 Peter 1:9 (NIV)

No temptation has overtaken you except what is common to mankind. And God is faithful; he will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, he will also provide a way out so that you can endure it.
– 1 Corinthians 10:13 (NIV)

I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.
– John 16:33 (NIV)
