Reasons For Christmas

Reasons For Christmas

And there were shepherds living out in the fields nearby, keeping watch over their flocks at night. An angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were terrified. But the angel said to them, “Do not be afraid. I bring you good news that will cause great joy for all the people. Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; he is the Messiah, the Lord. This will be a sign to you: You will find a baby wrapped in cloths and lying in a manger.”
– Luke 2:8-12 (NIV)

In the message the angels delivered to the shepherds on the night of Jesus’ birth, we discover what Christmas is all about. Christmas is all about God sending His Son to earth. Christmas wasn’t man’s idea, it was God’s idea. Christmas wasn’t man’s initiative, it was God’s initiative. Christmas came about because of God.

1. Christmas occurred because of God’s desire

But the angel said to them, “Do not be afraid. I bring you good news that will cause great joy for all the people…”
– Luke 2:10 (NIV)

  a.  Embrace us with His love

…good news…for all people
– Luke 2:10 (NIV)

For God so greatly loved and dearly prized the world that He [even] gave up His only begotten (unique) Son, so that whoever believes in (trusts in, clings to, relies on) Him shall not perish (come to destruction, be lost) but have eternal (everlasting) life.
– John 3:16 (Amplified Bible)

But God showed how much He loved us by having Christ die for us, even though we were sinful.
– Romans 5:8 (CEV)

Can anything ever separate us from Christ’s love? Does it mean he no longer loves us if we have trouble or calamity, or are persecuted, or hungry, or destitute, or in danger, or threatened with death? No, despite all these things, overwhelming victory is ours through Christ, who loved us. And I am convinced that nothing can ever separate us from God’s love. Neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither our fears for today nor our worries about tomorrow—not even the powers of hell can separate us from God’s love. No power in the sky above or in the earth below – indeed, nothing in all creation will ever be able to separate us from the love of God that is revealed in Christ Jesus our Lord.
– Romans 8:35; 37-39 (NLT)

  b.  Encourage us with His peace

..Do not be afraid…
– Luke 2:10 (NIV)

Therefore since we have been justified through faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ.
–  Romans 5:1 (NIV)

  c.  Enrich us with His joy

… great joy…
– Luke 2:10 (NIV)

My purpose is to give them a rich and satisfying life.
– John 10:10 (NLT)

2.  Christmas occurred by God’s design

Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; He is the Messiah, the Lord.
– Luke 2:11 (NIV)

  a.  Fulfill the Scripture

… in the town of David…
– Luke 2:11 (NIV)

  b.  Provide our salvation

… a Savior has been born…
– Luke 2:11 (NIV)

  c.  Rule as sovereign

… He is the Messiah, the Lord.
– Luke 2:11 (NIV)

That at the Name of Jesus every knee should bow, and things in heaven, and things in earth, and things under the earth.
– Philippians 2:10 (NIV)

3. Christmas occurred through God’s decision

This will be a sign to you: You will find a baby wrapped in cloths and lying in a manger.
– Luke 2:12 (NIV)

  a. He decided to come as a man

… a baby wrapped in cloths and lying in a manger.
– Luke 2:12 (NIV)

We don’t have a priest who is out of touch with our reality. He’s been through weakness and testing, experienced it all – all but the sin. So let’s walk right up to him and get what he is so ready to give. Take the mercy, accept the help.
– Hebrews 4:14-16 (The Message)

Anyone who has seen me has seen the Father.
– John 14:9 (NIV)

We don’t have a priest who is out of touch with our reality. He’s been through weakness and testing, experienced it all – all but the sin.
– Hebrews 4:15 (NIV)

  b. He decided to call out to men

This will be a sign to you: You will find…
– Luke 2:12 (NIV)

You will seek Me and find Me when you seek Me with all your heart. ‘I will be found of you,’ declares the LORD . . .
– Jeremiah 29:13-14a (NIV)

Jesus said, “I am the way, the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.
– John 14:6 (NIV)
